Kathryn Finney of The Budget Fashionista has mastered the art of getting what she wants without shelling out a lot of cash. We asked her to share some of her secrets on how to update your wardrobe for spring while keeping long-term wardrobe building goals in mind. Find out where to shop, what to buy, where to find inspiration, and her top wardrobe tip for anyone serious about their closet.
SB: Where can I find spring’s hottest trends on a budget?
K: The best places to find spring fashion on a budget are all online. I love stores like Asos.com and DorothyPerkins.com, both British stores with US sites. These stores have all the trends at prices that are reasonable. I also like the Gap, which is great for spring basics to mix with the trends.
SB: What items are worth the money for a warm-weather wardrobe update and will last for the long haul?
K: A great pair of walking sandals with about a 2-to-3 inch heel is a great warm-weather investment. You will wear them a TON and they can last for several seasons.
SB: I like to look to celebrity street style photos for inspiration. How can I get the look of my favorites – like Michelle Williams and Rachel Bilson – without busting my budget?
K: The best way to get the look of your fav celebrity on a budget is to turn to the blogs. On The Budget Fashionista, we often deconstruct the style of top celebrities, breaking down their looks step by step. We actually deconstructed Rachel Bilson’s style.
SB: Any tips for long-term wardrobe building?
K: The key to building a functional wardrobe is to focus on finding pieces that work for your body and your life. I always tell people to focus on what I call the 70/30 rule: 70% of your closet should be classic pieces like a great white top and awesome black handbag and the 30% should be for trendy, fun pieces like the orange skinny jeans. That way, your closet is always in balance.
